Around the World in 280 Days

Well, a little bit longer actually. I've been thinking about this for quite some time now and there was always some reason, some excuse for not doing this. Work, career, money, etc etc. I've again been giving this some thought over the past few months, and if I'm always saying that work should only be a part of your life and that you should decide on what is important for you and just go for it, then I should really put my money where my mouth is - shouldn't I? :) So, starting this August, I will be off travelling for a year or so.

I've used Google Earth to help shape my travel plans, these will of course change over time and I'm probably not going to follow them exactly. Nevertheless, I did find it be an excellent aide in helping me determine where I want to go and what I would like to see. And it looks cool too! The file with my travel plans can be found here (yes yes in zipped form, on geocities, as this blog, owned by Google, doesn't allow for Google Earth files to be uploaded... bah).

The files also contains some time markers showing where I will be (roughly) at which dates, so if you're in the neighbourhood, give me a shout. I will also convert this blog into means to stay in touch and give some updates on what I've been seeing, doing and all that kind of stuff. Photos will in due course be uploaded here (where else? :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those of you without GE (you poor souls), my itinerary will look something like this: I will start off travelling to Gibraltar during August '07. Crossing the Straits of Gibraltar I will head over to Morocco and then on to Istanbul in September '07. From there I will travel overland to Egypt via Syria and Jordan, seeing the ruins of Palmyra, visiting Petra, doing some diving in Dahab and of course visit the pyramids, all in October '07. Next on the list is a trip Thailand, visit the river Kwai, experience the Loi Krathong festival and make a detour to Cambodia in order to visit Angor Wat during November 2007.

Then it's on to Malaysia and Singapore. Indonesia will be visited during December 2007, plan to see Borobudur and be in Bali for New Year's. Afterwards, India - I will travel around the Northern part of the country, hoping to be in Agra during a full moon in January 2008. The journey will continue on to China, plan to be there before Chinese New Year in February. Will tour the country in an anti-clockwise manner, travelling along the coast, then heading inland and hopefully be in Lhasa at the end of March 2008.

From China I will fly to the U.S.A. and travel from there to Mexico in April 2008. Hope to learn some Spanish in Mexico, see Teotihuacan, Chichen Itza and also do some diving. From Mexico I'll fly to Chile, learn some more Spanish and make a detour to see Easter Island, I'll be there around May 2008. Final stop is Peru, where I missed a few things during my last trip, most notably the sacred valley and Moray (some very cool round circular terraces). Hm, perhaps I'll also go and hike the Inca trail again, but haven't quite decided on that :)
