I had anticipated the heat, the shopping and the excess before travelling to Dubai. In between the huge construction sites, the amazing Burj Khalifa, the malls and switching between AC, my preconceptions were confirmed. It is fascinating to see how this city has build itself up and made the transition from an oil fueled economy. Yes, there are great restaurants, some amazing architecture and watching the ships at the harbour is fascinating. But in between it all, for me something is missing. It is like the city lacks a soul.
There is one thing here though that I have fallen completely in love with: gourmet dates shops. I never knew there are some many variants and so many combinations with almonds etc that just taste so incredibly good. My favourite has been Bateel, I read they also have a store in London. I will definitely go and visit it.
