In Thailand everyone smiles, it is one of the most friendly countries I've ever visited. However, they also smile and laugh when you make a mistake or do something embarrassing. You start to feel that they are laughing at you... very infuriating, because of the times, when something like this happens, you're either a) lost or b) missed a transport connection, well or something similar. But actually they are not, they are laughing to turn into a joke of sort, and help you save face.. quite important there.
In Indonesia when someone doesn't understand what you're saying they just start saying no no and make hand gestures waving goodbye, basically telling you to f-off, if you didn't understand it better. India is the other side of the coin. Of they don't understand what you're saying they'll just say yes yes. Both have to do with them not wanting to look ignorant.
The Middle-East (still need to write that post entry someday)is the most twisted place that I've come across. I've noticed it a few times now, but it seems to me that the basic response to an argument is to throw a fit. Even though it is apparently bad form to loose your cool. Not only that, but let's say that someone is hassling you, and you tell them to go away, then the person hassling will think it is the most common thing in the world to pretend that he (or she) has the moral high ground and can hurl all kinds of insults. Even though they started the argument in the first place! It might have something to do with the fact that everyone seemingly wants to appear strong. Not sure...
